What can I grow in a Small Greenhouse?
I have a small 4' x 8' greenhouse? I would like to grow as much as possible in there but am not sure what I could grow in there. It has window vents at either end and flaps at the bottom that open as well. If you have any ideas on how to maximize the space in a cost effective manner I would appreciate it. Sketches or photos would also be appreciated. I am in Iowa in zone 4b. Also, when should the vents be open.
If your greenhouse is free-standing then you are going to need a heavy duty heater to keep it warm in winter. In the summer, you will have the opposite problem as the sun will heat it up very quickly. You will need a good fan at one end to circulate outside air through it. You may also need shade cloth on the roof to keep sunlight and temperatures down in the summer. The shade cloth can be removed in the fall.
I suggest you stick with mostly small plants that do not grow tall because you have so little space. You can maximize space by using closet poles to hang plants, assuming you have enough height inside.
In selecting plants, you have to be very aware of the light needs of the various plant species and just how much light will filter into The Greenhouse to the plants. That will depend on your use of shade cloth or the location of the greenhouse relative to other buildings and trees. The light in your greenhouse will be much more intense than light that comes through a sunny indoor house window. So keep that in mind.
Plants that require more light should be placed closer to the roof while lower light plants can be placed beneath them where they will be more shaded.
Every greenhouse is unique, so you will have to experiment. But you will probably be surprised by how intense the light can be, how hot it can get in summer, and how cold it can get in winter.
